Astromythology means that there is an analogy between mythology and astrology. The myths and legends of all the world's cultures have had meaning in the collective unconscious for thousands of years and have a profoundly transformative potential. In the sense that they make us aware of the pitfalls of mythological stories that we must avoid in order to better express our true nature.


Myths 'organise' our biological, psychological, social and spiritual reality at least as much as our genetic heritage, education and cultural context.

Thus, the symbolism of these mythological stories can be found in some of our attractions as well as in the composition of the sky at the time of our first breath in this incarnation.


By way of introduction, we will examine certain planetary positions in the zodiac and certain anecdotes by analogy as keys to understanding one or more Greek myths.



If we were to take a myth which is not of Greek origin, but which has been important in history up to the present day, we would take the myth of Faust. We do not claim to know the history of the countless mutations that the myth has undergone over the centuries. What interests us here is to promote an analogical understanding between mythology and astrology with the aim of transforming our personality, which most often identifies with powerful archetypes.


According to some research, the character of Faust really existed from the 1460s and 1550s. Georg Sabellicus, Faustus junior of Trittheim and the Johann Faust of the Heidelberg University archives. Commentators identify them today. His real name was Georg Sabel. Faustus" was a nickname that probably ended up replacing his real name.

The essence of the Faust myth


There is both a need for ontological transformation and a resistance to it. Faust's dilemma represents his need to seek out disciplines that would enable him to metamorphose, to transform himself internally. But he will use them more for others than for himself. For his greatest difficulty will be to lose control. The only way to lose control and enter into a true metamorphosis is to accept the death of his representations. The symbolic death of his social representations, his attachments, his wealth, his loves and his habits. Faust's ambivalence lies in his desire to learn about all systems of understanding. To this end, he is interested in theology, medicine, astrology, metaphysics, magic and the occult. In all cases, the Faustian will seek to understand the phenomena and mechanisms of inner patterns in order to understand how the essence of human nature works. However, it is his need and desire to use his intellect to understand the phenomena of his human nature that is the obstacle to his own transformation. The function of Faust's intellect is not only to provide knowledge, but it is also a means to protect himself from the reality of his experiences. Thus, we can conclude that Faust will be able to achieve his metamorphosis if he experiences it directly. That is to say, he allows himself to pass through places and situations where he can become (without thinking). It is from this dimension that he will be able to meet Hades (who is formless and thoughtless) and descend into his depths to meet the true metamorphosis. Faust's power then becomes a capacity for rebirth that no longer comes from knowledge but from the lived immediacy of each moment of his experiences.


The astrological analogy of the myth


The myth of Faust in astrology is mainly summed up by 3 planets, a red aspect between Pluto and the Sun and a Mercury valued either in conjunction with the ruler of the Ascendant, or in conjunction with the Ascendant, and with Mercury in Gemini or in Virgo. However, it would be enough to have a ruling Sun, a ruling Pluto and a valued Mercury to have a Faustian myth in your chart.

For example, someone who has a Sun conjunct Mercury and square Pluto has a Faustian myth. Similarly, if Pluto is in a planetary cluster with Mercury and the Sun is in square to the Ascendant ruler. A cluster of more than 3 planets in Scorpio with Mercury valued also indicates a Faustian myth. This will be accentuated if the cluster is in the 8th house.


Each myth has a zodiacal correspondence, the Faust myth is linked to Scorpio, but not all Scorpios have a Faust myth in their chart.

The other 11 signs of the zodiac will have a role to play in the transformation process of the myth. The signs adjacent, in sextile, square, trine, quincunx and opposition to the sign corresponding to the myth in question will in some cases help and in others break the pattern, etc. We will have the opportunity to discuss this in another article.

The sign that precedes Cancer

Sometimes you will read that we need to move away from the sign that precedes the sign of a particular myth.


In the case of the myth of Narcissus, the astrological sign associated with him is Cancer and the sign that precedes it is Gemini. When we say that we must leave Gemini behind, we can imagine that these are the parts of the sign that relate to echo in the myth of Narcissus. Understanding is linked to the Gemini's tendency to gossip, their willingness to talk a lot in order not to reveal themselves. In the myth, Narcissus, in order to feel important, talks about his personal experiences, which are in reality veils that protect him from his deepest nature. Thanks to the acceptance of what he is, and thanks to his courage to go through what he really is, without justifications or explanatory speeches, Narcissus moves away from this part of Gemini that hinders him, even blocks him, on the evolutionary path of his myth.


In my opinion, it is not a matter of leaving the whole Gemini meaning, but of leaving the parts that block the process of transformation in the myth of Narcissus.


Suppose a chart is inhabited by the myth of Narcissus, with the Moon, ruler of Cancer, as the chart's dominant and a planetary cluster in Gemini or Virgo, and that the chart also has a North Node in Gemini. 


It seems to us that more or less all schools of astrology agree that the North Node of a sign and a house are the energies that we must acquire for the evolution of our personality. According to the myth of Narcissus, the person inhabited by such a configuration will have to go through a process of transformation of the part of Gemini that hinders his expression. That is, the tendency to echo the world, to repeat what he has learned from others or from books, to be in an explanatory discourse, to run away from his responsibility to be what he is and to remain hidden behind the veil of his persona, etc. At the same time, with the North Node, he will have to learn to live the process of blossoming of his personality with Gemini. That is to say, to be attentive to others, to listen to them, to integrate into the world and the different singularities of each person and/or of his close environment, to live in the moment of what is experienced, etc. With this example, we can clearly see that it is a question of using or getting rid of the parts of Gemini that elevate us and/or distance us from ourselves.


The astrological keys to a Narcissus myth


The signs that are linked to the Narcissus myth are Cancer and Leo.


In the most obvious cases, the Moon ruler of Cancer must be part of the ego, that is, the Moon in conjunction with the ruler of the Ascendant, or the Moon in conjunction with the Ascendant, the Moon in conjunction with angles other than the Ascendant. The Moon in aspect other than conjunction to the ascendant's ruler and a dark Moon in Cancer or a Sun/Moon in Cancer/Lion.

Assuming a dominant Moon in aspect to Pluto with a valued Mercury or in the sign of Gemini and/or Virgo, the chart will show a strong Narcissus myth.


The expression of a Solar/Lion Narcissus will be in self-assertion in order to shine to be able to exist and be loved, whereas the Lunar or Cancer side of the Narcissus will be in victimisation, increasing its fragility and dependence to exist and be loved.
